Angry Gnomes spawn from Sparkling Mines.
The first Angry Gnome I got dropped a Gnome Hat once defeated and the second Angry Gnome dropped a Gnome Hat and a Pitchfork once defeated.
I have boxes, I have the key, but cannot seem to open a box. What do I need to do?

It has been reported that gnomes fought before goal 5 don't count toward the 20 needed for goal 5.

Go to the goal in the goal book, press GO, and it will take you back to the Magic Forge where you do a 15 minute craft.

I just planted the diamond head flowers and am waiting to collect them. (Goal 4) The Angry Gnomes spawned from my Sparkling Mines at this point. I couldn't tell you if they would have spawned during earlier goals. They take 10 hits to defeat.
So, for early goals, have Old Thomas and Libraries ready. Check.
Any splash screens yet regarding drops for Medusa or snake? This so far is reminding me of the sad boy and his peacock event... So I am thinking she MIGHT be a walker/slitherer...
I just spawned an Angry Gnome from my Hatchery
