I'm testing your hypothesis this tournament by mirroring as much as possible the dragons you are using in each round to compare our results. It's not looking good so far as my theory that I'm a profiled player like Nuicakes (i.e. our tournament win/loss results are very similar) appears to be holding true with my dismal result to round 17 being 17/9 versus your much better result of 17/1 with no wins registered by my level 15 single element dragons so far! Nice to be so blessed!

Conclusion: Level 15 single element commons aren't much good for players like me who have been put into a tournament group with an increased difficulty level as none of them registered a win in this tournament (probably due to their already inherently lower probability of winning as compared to champion dragons).

I play on an Android phone. It may be different devices, different results. I always hard tap the screen when battling. Once upon a time I used to long press the "bash" and "magic" icons and would lose a lot of battles even with dragons that weren't supposed to lose.
I started about a year ago and my tournaments fall into two categories*: 50+% losses or run out of time. It's frustrating but I'll go through the losses if it means I can finish. I play on an iPad Pro 10.5".

I just can't get past the Bonfire (black-yellow) in round 19. I've been at it all day. Any suggestions? Please keep in mind that I have no special types or ultra-rare. My only super-rares at/above L7 are Clown, Hyacinth and Planet. No high-level dragons.
That's gonig to make it hard. The tournaments get easier as you level up and get better dragons. However, do you have Landworm? He's usually pretty good, along with Atlantis and Honeybee - those 3 were my go tos back in the day. Do you have Jade or Messenger? Those may be a good ones also.
Landworm was my go-to dragon for a very long time. Also, read skyharbor's post. I've leveled up my single element common dragons and they routinely beat champions.
Well, I am about to start on Neo Glasswing, who I could not beat the last time he was in a tournament so we will see how this goes.
I feel for you! I play on an iPhone 8 Plus now but during the period from March 2017 to June 2017 which was the period I started to have horrible tournament results (before I quit playing them for 7 months), I was playing on an Android Nexus 5. It's not playing styles or platform one plays on. It is that we have been put into a profiled group to be permanently doled out more difficult tournament experiences (just like how they can group certain players to be in a Leaderboard group) to compel us to spend gold to complete our tournaments. It is easy to do! From an algorithm perspective, just simply putting on a loading / reduction factor of 25% would be enough to significantly increase our losses when compared to non-profiled players.
The criteria would be something you and I would have in common. For instance it is likely to be something like the number of GPDs you have, the number of level 15 dragons on your island, number of champions and diamonds in your portfolio, etc. I'm a level 200 player with:
1) 12 gold producing dragons
2) 19 level 15 dragons consisting of 6 champions (including hybrids), 4 diamonds (including hybrids), 3 other special type dragons (i.e. Passion, Pyramid, Gold Horizon)
3) 13 pure Champion type dragons and 14 Champion hybrids
4) 4 pure Diamond type dragons and 16 Diamond hybrids
5) 40 dragons between levels 11 and 14 totaling 59 dragons above level 10
