Expansions - what's your approach?

I've been playing solidly for over 2 years now and still have 6 expansions left to expand
Haven't used gems on any yet... but thinking i'll try and get 999gems for one of the 5permit blocks as it is the cheapest way to buy permits with gems

... Although after buying the cabbage hut i'm back to 70gems might take me a while to get to 999gems

I had read about keeping one plot open but don't know how I clicked it so can't make and expansion tickets

I'm hoping to amass loads of trade tickets but mostly I forget

I just tapped the expand button and there are six plots! Looks like I will be busy making more wisp lanterns and making expansion permits again. This is awesome!

My strategy is to open expansion plots towards the special plots that have storyline quests. I then can complete them at my leisure. Since they are started, if I need to work on one if a special timed quest or event quest is related I can.
