Interesting change....The gems to skip went down after I visited 2 market places (only had 2 out) I can't remember what it was, but it was at least 100. Now it's 50 to skip the last two.

That is an excellent improvement! Hopefully it's the same for all the steps.

If I do the "search the Elder cave" adventure for fire and ice seeds, would it trigger the story book to start?

No, it won't start the quest You can do the adventure if you like, but please note that it won't count towards the goal to do the adventure when you get to that part.
