Gems disappeared!

I want to play so watched videos to get more gems so I can buy lives. I bought lives with my gems. Then I got a 'game has been refreshed' memo and hit OK to continue. Hey presto my lives were gone, and my gems were gone too. What's happening? Very frustrating! iPad mini, version 9, been fine til now.....
