I've been able to get about six count of cherry dust for every two trees I chop down.
Currently growing more aspen to get one more dust for potion.

Crab apple trees have been the best one for me dropping cherry dust.

This is what you need for the cherry growth potion and for upgrading to level 2.

Collect from Ivys x2
Craft cherry growth potion x1 in potion shop 6 dust 40 living wood and 40 sap.
Upgrade tree to level 2 6 cherry dust and 1 cherry growth potion and 20 water.
There is a 5 hour timer on the tree.

Red Acer and Crab Apple have been good for me. Alas, I also collected from Ivy's Hut a couple of hours ago.

Let the deforestation begin...I hate chopping my beautiful trees. Most are down to just 1 chop because I won't totally chop them down
