I was reading kooky and others getting down on themselves for buying a new habitat instead of upgrading their current ones, and I don't get it - there really is no difference. Buy=250 gold / Upgrade=250 gold - so the only difference I see is that if you buy a new one and sell your old one, you gain 15,000 coins (not that it matters to some players).

There is one difference if you have already hit the habitat level.

You can't buy the new habitat without selling an old one. If your stable is full and all of your Diamond Fields are occupied, that also means selling off a diamond or diamond hybrid.

That's a very real possibility for anyone who's been playing this game for a long time.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but what I read was that they bought the new one so they had room for at least one more anyway. No matter I guess since everyone seems to have worked it all out by now
