Sorry if this has already been asked but can I complete the valentines task without the mine? I'm upto the part where it asks me to mine 10 times, but I don't have the mine? Do I have to spend gems to get past this?

Yes you'll more than likely need to in order to get the fox you've came this far it may be well worth it.

No, you don't need to mine. You need to "collect" 10 gems. They can come from stores.
You need to collect 30 ( I think ) Valentine cards and a pearl bracelet
Then you need to collect 40 Valentine cards and the rhinestone collar.
All can be bought in stores.
Forget about the challenge goals and just concentrate on finding V Cards, bracelet and collar.

Step 7, goal 1. says "Mine 10 times". I believe you have to mine regardless if you find the rhinestones or not. Yes, you can purchase the rhinestones for goal 2 of Step 7. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I never needed pearls or nets

Last upgrade was 40 cards and 1 rhinestone collar

The one before that was 30 cards and bracelet

I bought all from other users
