Farm Story

I need help with receiving gifts from neighbors for my construction. When I received something for the new construction it just tells me that it is for construction use. When am I able to use these items. Do I have to wait until I get 12 of each item before I can use them. I am trying to add them as to see how many more items of each materials I need and it won't let me.

Unfortunately you have to save (take up room in your barn) before you can build
or increase building slots, etc

So if I am understanding this correctly, all materials will stay in inventory until I received enough of all material, then I can build?
