Yeah, I used to have a very similar strategy, and then I switched to just mashing down the right button and didnt seem to get any more or fewer double hits.

Mind you, I'd love it if for each attack there was exactly one attack that would do 2 damage and there was a subtle variation in the animation that would tell you which attack was the right one if you wanted to take the time to figure it out. I just have a hunch that that's not actually the way that battles were actually implemented

Can someone's confirm or correct my belief that it doesn't make a difference which of the three attack buttons you press when attacking?

As a long time player, I would say their is no attack better then others, however if you get a critical (2 HP) hit with one of the 3 swings, then choose another of the two for the next. Then I get close to 50% chance of a critical on the next swing. I never do 2x the same in a row, unless just 1 HP remains.

I believe its time to gather some field data. I will beat the next 10 beasts using only LEFT button and report results here. Others please choose your own pattern (not random). When reporting note your level and how much damage you did on each stroke and energy you got.

I have started as well. Doing various combos to see the results. I'll post all of this once I have enough data, that should take a week or so as I want around 100 battles.

i can add that boars also like:
- mines, troves, and outcropping of rocks and formations.

also, i guess the only buildings attracting fangbeast are hatchery and stable (ie livestock related) - i've checked over one month.
it might be i'm wrong, will keep checking anyhow.

Actually boars spawn with nearly every building. The data here is just from the 150 battles I made since a week.
