Vegetables disappear

I have been trying to save up potatoes and carrots to make stew. Twice, I have had 4 potatoes, only to come back a couple hours later and all the potatoes have disappeared. This is definitely frustrating, as I have not been using any vegetables, just waiting to build up for the stew task.
