Had to battle twice

I was playing the latest tournament which the prize is noelephant and I was on round 3 I had a critical hit but then a hour later I had play the same round again

Sounds like you had an out of sync error.
When coming into your game to battle, make sure you give your game time to sync up with the servers before you battle.

Also collect coins, visit a neighbor (some kind of action ) before leaving the game after you battle to make sure your progress saved.
