Short but sweet general guide to battles:
The more rare your animal, the higher the level, and the stronger elementally your animal is vs. your opponent, the better your odds of getting a critical hit.
You can only win by getting at least one critical hit on your opponent - it is random chance whether you get one, but the odds of getting one are better when you choose the best fighter!
Choose your most rare and/or highest level according to the recommend elements in this table:

What to do if you get stuck:
Unfortunately, it seems that the game sometimes "sticks" players on certain rounds and they can't get past them even when using the best fighters. If you get stuck on a round for 10+ tries, we have found that uninstalling and reinstalling the app can help. Most get a victory within a few tries after reinstalling the app. My other tip is, don't give up using your best fighter! If you have several fighters that are equally well matched, by all means try them all, but I don't recommend choosing a "weaker" fighter just to do something different. Some rounds are just deliberately tough, but you really do have the best chance if you stick with the best match - most rare, higher level, and one of the recommended element combos. If you need help determining which is your best fighter, please ask!

If your element is above your opponent's, it is strong to it. Conversely, below = weak.
(If your element is strong vs. one and weak vs. the other, or if it is not directly above or below the other, it is neutral. For example, electric is strong to water (it's above water) but weak to earth (below it) and neutral to everything else.
