The goals in this new game seem to have changed a bit since I started playing, so feel free to correct me if they're not up to date! From the beginning, until you get the sword and battle your first card:

Edit: This thread is not very accurate as of jan 2015, because of additions to the game.

Look for a Spellbound Thorn (chop down trees, in my case 1,5 trees)

Gather 10 wood (chop down trees)
Repair the Hilt (in workshop)

Goal: Spellthorn Magic
Craft the Spellthorn Sword (in the workshop)

Goal: Epic Card Battle (Beware of the strike to the right, it costs gems!!)
Defeat the Spade Playing Card (tap on the Spade Card to battle)

Goal: Gifts For the Princess (this goal was added later, so I don't know what triggers it)

Afraid not, mines and chopping rocks, can't remember if any of other buildings drops coal, I'll let you know if I find any other coal source.
