The more rare your animal, the higher the level, and the stronger elementally your animal is vs. your opponent, the better your odds of getting a critical hit.
You can only win by getting at least one critical hit on your opponent.

8. Steam Trunk is kicking my L15 terradactyl's bootie even though my animal is a) super rare, b) level 15, c) earth > fire, d) electric > water. Three losses now on the one I should have one of the best chances of winning.

Gem is neutral. So is toucan. But I guess trying one once just for being higher rarity is worth a shot. I will try terra 1 more time then try something else if he fails me again.

I went the first 7 rounds without a loss. Then my luck evened out by making me take 6 tries to get the Steam Trunk. Finally did and starting round 9 with another loss. I have a busy day, including some time in the subway meaning I will be unable to battle due to no internet, and so I estimate I have 7-8 free battles left in which I must win 4. Overall my win rate is at 61.5% so I have a chance. But unlike the last tournament (which was difficult early on then not as difficult as usual in the late stages), this is shaping up for me as being of the easy early / very difficult final third variety. And Me going 1-6 in the last 7 battles is NOT good.

I don't know yet if I will spend gems on this tournament. My philosophy on these is to I go as far as I can for free, setting alarms during the day to battle as close to every hour as possible. When time is almost up, if I am very close but haven't won, THEN I will spend some gems to skip the hour waits in hopes of finishing it out. But if I beat 0 or 1 more animal between now and then, I won't waste my gems. And IMO, the price for the ultimate hit is WAY too high. I won't spend that many gems on it. Actually, I guess if there were 2 minutes left and I were on the final animal and had 2 non-critical hits, then I *might* spend all those gems to finish it out. ... Though in this tournament that would require me to be fully cognizant at 2:28am and I'm too old for that lol!
