Okay, the skulls in the battlegrounds symbolize BOSS BATTLES - they require more than one round of battling them to take them down. I took a ss I will add to the OP.
I tried my L15 sloth against the first one, a koala cadabra in round 10. He got 2 criticals and the koala's health bar is low enough I may finish him off in my second battle.
