I got mine while I was trying to breed the crystal unicorn (magmacore and turtisle) But I think you have a better chance just using a rock rhino and frost fang to get the griffin

Everytime I've gotten one, it was with multiple rare element pairs. That way I had more chances for different critters to appear. Really, if you want a direct route, try rock rhino and frost fang. I like the multiple- mixed elements method, because then I have a chance for other rare items too, and the fails do not bother me as much.
I've breed Frostfand with Rock Rhino.
Frostfang and rhino I always end up with a rainguin. So using four elements for better chances of other animals too.
