Well, I can't defend the block, but it's quite easy to imagine the Fairy Beams were crafted using old, mossy logs. lol
And at least neither are sitting in a pool of green slime or troll snot!
ETA: although, now that I think of it, moss will grow on stone in very damp climates. Does that tell us something about the nature of the Plume?
