Alluring cheese

The goal is to place a trap for a beast, add cheese, then lure the beast to the trap.

I placed the traps and now they just sit there. I don't know where to get cheese - it's not an option to craft in the kitchen. But if I tap on the trap, I get an axe handle and 0/1 shows up.

No need to add cheese or do anything.

if you want a beast to appear, tap on the axe. A fangbeast or skunkupine will appear nearby, depending which trap you bought. Then slay it as per normal. The trap will disappear as it is one use only.
