To Level up, you need to increase your XP. When you cook items, look at the amount of XP you will recieve as opposed to the amount of coin you will receive. The XP is the value that is added to the number in your toolbar where your current level is shown.

The longer the dish takes to cook, the more chances you have of it being a higher XP type of item. Yet, if you have all day long to spend on the game, then cook the quick dishes repeatedly over and over consecutively to get your XP quicker.
