Lost gems.

I had a total of 23 gems, the last three of which I received today after finishing the market quest for hides . I collected that, planted in my garden then went away for about an hour. When I returned to collect from my garden, I only had 7 gems left. I'm fairly certain I did not spend the gems (nothing new is in my inventory) as I was contemplating saving them for a sheep.
