Maybe because you can earn 50-500 gems for free. I don't think most players buy gems.

Sounds about right. You also get 6 each time for a dling a dumb game you don't want to play but have to because of all the popups. Then again, you also blow a good portion of the ones you earn accidentally by clicking on something.

The most I've ever saved is around 60 gems during the xmas season. I always try to spend my gems after I hit around 24 gems because I'm playing with an ipod. A slight slip of my finger results in months of work lost.
