I hatched a life dragon last night and set a water dragon to hatch, this morning my life dragon was still in the nest?

at the time you put your water egg in the nest, you didn't have internet connection.

What does that mean?

This game stores information in the Team Lava servers. Basically, it doesn't use up the memory of your device to store your progress (the app itself occupies space though) , it saves up your game in the servers.
If you're disconnected from the net and/ or out of sync with the servers, then your progress is not saved there, so you can't access your progress.

Try visiting your neighbors after you've done any breeding or something, so it can save up what you just did.
