Did the expansion with no reward

I just did an expansion on the right side (the next right after the expansion of Ivy the tree lady), it costs me 5 lantern and 30.000 coins. When its clear I found the land is just empty, without any single of natural resources such as trees or rocks or whatever. Is the game designs like that or its just mine? Does anyone knows the answer and tell me?
