i think in the market place you can buy stone outcroppings and then clear them to get stone.

Thanks, after posting I looked again and found it.

Get the sparkling mine. You can collect from it evey 4 hours. It gives multiple stone plus the chance for other items. Over time it's more cost effective than the iron piles and rock outcroppings
