When my niece was applying to colleges, the colleges were also checking out applicants facebook accounts.

Not only their accounts but the accounts they are connected to. So if your buddy has you doing something in a picture or whatever they find it. The company I work for has people that watch the activity on Facebook of management and it can break your career, ie you can be denied a promotion or other opportunity because of something on Facebook. Even hourly union employees have been fired over things said on Facebook (mostly teenagers ) because what used to be a private conversation is now on public display.
