Brown planks vs Regular Planks

Question,

Am i missing something, here? Why do so many players gift brown planks? Are they useful for some other reason other than for constructing a couple of animal pens/decor?
What am ai missing?

It also seems like whenever I send out a material request for regular planks a lot of my neighbours, while they answer the material request sending me the correct planks will also send me brown planks...can one be substituted for the other?

Cannot substitute

Different items/pens require different planks etc.

FWIW there are planks, brown planks, and pink planks.

Just as there are cushions, green cushions and purple cushions

Thanks. That's what I thought too...not sure why i keep getting back brown planks...hmmm...
