I open BS on ipad2 and go to messages to start tipping. When I hit the first entry, my game force closes. Force close happens even if I go to neighbors and try to start tipping from there. Anyone have any thoughts?

Same here, however I was trying to use my Elocity tablet, also I had not transferred my accounts over from my IPhone just yet. I am afraid that it will keep force closing and ask me to keep creating an account each time it dies. Hopefully someone will help us both.
If you're on iOS, try deleting all versions of BS, and only reinstall the Valentines version. If you're on Android, try just deleting and reinstalling, then moving the game to the SD card. You can also try restarting your device (both platforms) first to see if that help clears it up.
Whenever you are having issues, try these two things first - restart your device,

I have the same problem. Still tipping rounds daily but stopped leaving messages. It seems to help cut down on the game resets. Just let your neighbors know that you'll be silently tipping due to system lags.
Only have valentines version on my iDevices.
I thought it was only me.
Do you know of any action TL is taking to fix this?
Maybe TL needs to purge their database? :P
