Where are the requested quest items going?

After we obtain all items needed for a particular quest (santa hats, winter coats, etc.), where do all the excess items go? I always request more than I need and know for fact I receive excess responses, because I get a "progress" notification each time. They aren't going to my inventory like the excess construction supplies do, so where are they? It would make sense that we could use the excess items for future quests, just like we do with the excess supplies for constructible items. Is this not the case? If not, then why are people still able to send them if we never see them??

They are going to your inventory on Farm Story Halloween. (Though last I checked, you can't see images of what was sent, you can only see how many of each mystery item you have.)

For now they look like one purpose use items so unless there are future goals or appliances that use them it's all wasted.

Then why are neighbors able to keep accepting old requests, and why do I keep getting a the flashy "progress" icon?

I no longer have Halloween version in my phone. Deleted it soon after all the seasonal crops were taken.
