It's actually used for animals to feed from, but serves as a bed for the baby Jesus in the Nativity Story.

A bed for a holy baby is a place that holds animal food? That's whacked out.
The Nativity story is all about the birth of Jesus Christ. Joseph brought Mary, bearing God's son, to Bethlehem. There was no room for them at all in any of the inns and they stayed in a barn. She gave birth and used the manger for Baby Jesus' bed.
