You may only go on the plotted (brown squares) - you may not go on the green at all, and you are to go in the middle - you'll need to in order to get bows and gifts - but will only be able to get there using the pink arrows.

I don't think there is turning involved, rather simply move up, down, left, or right based on your view of the board, not the ponies. (I hope I'm right about this?)
