If your group didn't have 20 players in it, then yes that's possible. Groups are made up of players with similar levels. Getting more than 5000 points by now is relatively easy to do though is you use a few boosts and have a bucket load of stored energy. It's not uncommon for players to get into the 20000's to win a Leaderboard. Depends on your group and individual style etc. They may have changed their name in game too...
out of interest, how do you know they only just showed up? did you screen shot all of your group? If you think that somethings amiss, you're welcome to reach out to Support with your info or one of the Community Managers.
Well in this case rather not join a leaderboard game. That’s just pointless. How did I realize the new player joining? Just check regularly the leaderboard.
