I always say never sleep on the basic dragons. Bastiann who used to post his battles inspired me to get my basic dragons up to level 15 (Air, Fire, Forest, Magic) and, by golly, those are some of my best fighters now.

I hate the 42 battles - I prefer 18, 24, or 30. The 42 battles always ends during a busy workweek making it such a hassle.
