Rainbow cupcakes taste bitter??
I am making a rainbow cake for my sister's birthday and decided to try rainbow cupcakes as a taste-test today. I made them and they looked good but the tasted extremely "bitter".
I'm not sure what the problem is (I used Betty Crocker White cake Mix and Wilton gel paste food coloring) I checked the expiration date and it still was a long way from expiring.
I don't know what to do and what happened- I already have bought 3 white cake mixes.
Is it how the cake mix tasted like or because of the food coloring?
Please help!!

1 box betty crocker white cake mix
3 egg whites

Food coloring is your worst enemy when it comes to coloring your food. The effect leaves your frostings/creams bitter because of all the chemicals used to make food coloring.
Try using natural and organic ingredients to color your cakes. Blueberries for purple. Strawberries for red/pink. Orange for orange (obvi). You'll have to experiment with different fruits for different colors but I assure you this is the best (and tastiest) way to go.
Just always remember: food coloring is your worst enemy.

They sell organic coloring.why don't you try Betty Crocker food coloring so they're from the same brand?

Sounds like maybe too much food coloring which could be the gel color. Try the regular liquid kind and don't add a lot do a few drops at a time until the desired color is reached.

The red color gel from wilton leaves a bitter taste when used much, but always a little even when properly used. They look great, but don't taste that good. Try to use red fruits juice for coloring next time, and the taste will improve. So you probably didn't do anything wrong :-)
