How many gifts can you send & how do I use items not food

I am new to the game. I am sending gifts and accepting but sometimes it says I can not send gift. Is there a daily limit of how many you can send and receive? Is there a certain time when new gifts start for the day?
If I accept a request for an item a friend needs how does it get sent?

there's a gift limit for each player. you can only send gift once a day. when someone needs an item, they just ask a friend and that person gets a request. just click send and done. you can ask for stuff once a day form each neighbor

u can receive only 20 gifts and 20 requested items per day. if your neighbors already have 20 u can' t send gifts to them any more.
extra requests can be delayed and u may choose to deny them (which are 1 day old or more) to allow for new requests to come thru.
the day starts at 12:00am PST.
