Do I need to wait until that challenge to hatch the dragon or can I go ahead and do so?
You can and even should try to hatch one early. You can also evolve it to the required Level 6 early :DQuote:

When the instructions say to complete a quest, you can start it the day before but don't click it until prompted
When the task is to "harvest" a crop, you can plant it early but don't harvest until prompted

I keep getting 12 hours with my Water x Diamond combo :/ What do I have to do to be able to breed these commons necessary for the events? I have had zero luck lately.
It would have to be now I get Beryl. One of the last diamond types I have yet to breed, and of all times I get it first try during a storybook when there are breeding tasks. I played a Global leaderboard for a whole week speed breeding 14k of gold worth of water dragons using Diamond and Water and still didn't get it then. Used Hammerhead and Diamond this time.
