Hi kazzza1,
Yes, the blaster jewels (row blasters) are what you need to take out the glass on the sides. You make row (horizontal) blasters from vertical 4-jewel matches. [BTW, column (vertical) blasters are made by matching 4 jewels horizontally.]

In fact, you can find information on nearly all of the islands/regions, either by searching at Jewel Mania - Discussions, or using the Jewel Mania Regions - Master Thread, a "sticky" found at the top of page 1 (of JM Discussions.) It has links to the existing island threads - makes them easy to find.
Also...a good read, if you haven't already seen it, is the Jewel Mania - Basics. It's very helpful to know what each special jewel does ("effects," post 3) & how to use them in Advanced Combinations (post 4.)
