Spending gems

Yesterday I had 44 gems. Now I look and see I have only have 14 gems. What happened? I did not want to spend any gems. I have no idea what happened. Is there no yes/no confirm screen before spending gems? This is extremely frustrating and maddening, makes me not want to play this game any more.
