I've been meaning to pay attention to what category of a challenge that the mining for dragon pieces challenge is under. Does anyone know offhand? Is it breeding? Harvesting/Planting? I'm sure everyone has noticed that if you refresh a challenge, you'll get a challenge in that same "category" I.e. If you refresh a challenge to plant something, you'll get another challenge to plant or harvest. Post if you know what category the mining for dragon pieces challenge belongs to.

It belongs to a more or less "miscellaneous" category. It can change into "breed with a birthstone" , "breed with a peacock", "battle with a music" and to a few "breed with..." or "feed a..." with on the dots certain dragons that happen to be in a certain event or dragons which are temperarily breedable.
