Disappearing rewards

I finished a delivery truck and was (finally!) rewarded a gold cowbell. When I went to use it, it had disappeared and I was back down to two bells instead of the three I should have. What happened? Is there any way to get it back? It's not like I like have accidentally spent it since everything that is unlocked for me costs 3 gold cowbells.
