Role of roads

Do driveways of houses have to be connected to a road or not?

You could argue that it looks nicer if they are but there is nothing to stop you filling your map with back to back residences and still get the population increase, they'd be miserable but where are they going to go. :)

u can make nice round courtyards with it by placing 1 or 4 items not connected))
