Newbie question about cruises!

Hi, i am level 50 and have been playing for over 6 months but still cant seem to get the knack of cruises! Ive only completed one and I had to spend more money than id care to admit to do it! is there a way to do these without using a ridiculous amount of gems? What are everyones strategies? I have storage of 90 and all shops regenerate 4 itemss at a time. Any tips very welcome for the next cruise!
