Someone sent me a chocolate kiss. I clicked okay and the message disappeared. I looked in my gifts, but nothing was there. Is it a gift or just a "thank you" sort of thing?

"Chocolate kiss" is not an item / part, it was imaginary item for quest. So yeah you can't see it but it will count towards the progress. Someone cannot send you chocolate kiss, they might be requesting chocolate kiss from you and you clicked Accept.
