Nothing happening when game is in background

I will not use the game for hours (like when sleeping) and when I open it, almost nothing has happened. Barely any coin adds and food servings are barely down. Any ideas?

Make sure that your customers have a clear path to your tables and chairs.
Make sure that none of your servers are blocked off where they cannot serve the food.
Make sure your customers have access to the hostess/cashier podium.
