The theory behind choosing an ideal fighter is that an animal of higher rarity may have better odds of landing a 'Critical' against an opponent when using an attack that normally registers a 'Strong' hit. It is also theorized that a high-level fighter may have better odds. It's not a guarantee to win with one of these fighters, but it may increase your odds. Note that ANY animal of ANY level or rarity has a chance of landing a winning 'Critical' using ANY element (even 'Weak' ones).

Round 20: good and stuck! Maybe I need to raise my Barn Owl or Terradactyl to epic if I don't beat the Danebow soon... But I'm trying to save food... And then I thought of Ancient Sloth who saved the day with just one earth hit!

Round 27 & 28: Punk Skunk was being a real punk this morning! I lost three times to it until I got to the gym and battled during my workout - maybe that energy helped Eerie Owl finally beat the Skunk! Then I beat Turtle Dove right after my workout (after one loss). Maybe I should battle more at the gym! Lol!

Round 29: Well, this is getting a bit annoying... I wanted to be done with the tourney today, but Pluma just doesn't want to go away.

Round 30: Yay! Crystal Unicorn pulled through for me in the final round winning instantly against the Icegator!

I hate it when the prize for winning the round are tokens. I hope that means a couple rounds will have gems for prizes but I expect rounds 18 & 28 to give 10,000 coins and round 22 to give 1,000 apples instead. Well rounds 18 & 28 gave me 2 tokens and $10,000 coins. Round 22 was 2 tokens but Round 23 was 2 tokens and 1,000 Apples. Whoopee :p

Noticed that cost per battle has gone up to $3,000 per try.


Round 1 & 9: Water and Nature are both Strong against Egypt so Water/Nature is the choice and Sea Horse wins the first time in each round.
Round 2: Went with a strong fire but my Gold Lion lost. Switched to the Station Dalmation since Service is Strong against Dark in addition to Fire being strong against both Dark and Nature and got a victory.
Round 6: Never have seen an Ultra Rare so early in a tournament. Tried Sugarskul glider since Both Skull & Nature are Strong against Treasure. Lost 1st battle, won 2nd.
Round 7: Service is Strong against both Dark and Fire, so I chose Station Dalmation since it has Fire as well which is Strong against Dark.
Round 8: It's rare to face a common. Matripony is Strong against Water and it wins the first time.
Round 10: Earth is Strong against Electric and Neutral to Earth. Nature is Strong against Earth and Neutral to Electric. Grassquatch is the choice and it wins the first attack.
Round 11: Going with the Money Badger since it is Strong against Dark and Neutral to Water.
Round 12: Went with the Crystal Unicorn since it is Strong against Nature and gives me an advantage in rarity. A bit disappointed that it lost twice before winning on the third try.
Round 13: Water/Earth is a tough combination to get a double strong so I went with the Crystal Unicorn which is Strong against Earth and Neutral to Water.
Round 14: Another tough combination to get a Doubly Strong Attack against. Went with Money Badger since Treasure is Strong against Service and Neutral yo Earth.
Round 15: Going with Crystal Unicorn again since it is Strong to Nature and Neutral to Electric and it gives me a rarity advantage.
Round 16: Going for a strong Electric against Shamrock. Zapra loses the first two tries and finally wins the third time.
Round 17: Hard to get a Double Strong against Dark/Water so I went with the Money Badger since Treasure is Strong against Dark and Neutral to Water plus I get a rarity advantage. Won first try.
Round 18: Debated between Crystal Unicorn which is Strong against Earth and Money Badger which is Strong against Gem. Went with the Unicorn and she came through and won on the first try.
Round 19: Nature/Fire again giving my Unicorn a problem as she loses the first try and wins the second.
Round 20: Decided to give the Barn Owl a shot despite it being expired since Autumn is Strong against both Electric and Water. Lost first try but won the second.
Round 21: Water Strong against Music and Nature Strong against Earth, so Sea Horse is the choice. Loses first try and wins the second. Do I detect a pattern?
Round 22: Went with Zapra to get a strong Electric against valentine and won on the second try.
Round 23: Crustal Unicorn perfect since it is Strong against both Earth and Nature. Lost first try and won the second try. That makes 5 rounds in a row that happened.
Round 24: I went with the Money Badger to since Treasure is Strong to Dark. Service is the only double Strong against Dark/Fire and I don't want to use an expired animal when I am at a disadvantage in level. Won on the first try to break my string of 1-loss rounds.
Round 25: Using Crystal Unicorn again since it's Strong against Nature. Back to a loss on first try and the second as well. First 3 loss round, hopefully the last.
Round 26: Skull is a bit difficult since we have little data on it. I think Earth may be Strong to Skull but I know both Earth and Water are Strong to Fire so Glacial Griffin gets a try. Loses first try and wins the second.
Round 27: Need Fire to go against both Dark and Nature so I am going with the Gold Lion and he wins on the first try.
Round 28: The Crystal Unicorn is up again since it is Strong to Nature. First two tries are losses but she comes through on the third try.
Round 29: Earth Strong to Electric and Fire is Strong to Dark so Rubble Rooster is the choice. Lost first two times before winning.
Round 30: Gem Strong against both Earth and Nature so the Crystal Unicorn will be used to close out the tournament and it wins on the first try.

Yep, 100% correct on both assumptions:
1) QQ and ED are 100% interchangeable. Level differences between the two of them should be the only thing that could give one an edge over the other.
2) The Wild Wondercat is classified as ultra rare and the Patriotter as super rare. That SHOULD give an edge to the Wondercat. Having said that, I've been VERY underwhelmed by the Wondercat's performance in battle. It can all be coincidence, but nowadays I avoid picking water-fire as much as possible. Previously I used that combination against nature-fire opponents, but nowadays I favour the Eerie Owl (Halloween-Fire) for that, and so far I've had VERY good results with it.

I decided to "fight fire with fire" and instead of using a doubly strong opponent (i.e. an earth based animal) I used big daddy Ember to send the small rebellious level 2 Gold Lion back to its quarters. ;)

The answer: random.
But.... the 'random' factor IS influenced by the opponent you choose; you improve your odds by choosing strong elements, high level, and as rare an animal as possible.
At the end of the day it's still a roll of the dice (which is why you can win against a level 20 ultra rare using a level 1 Pyro Pony, and why your epic Ultra Rare can also lose from a level 1 common animal), but you can "pick a dice with better odds" by optimising the combination of elements, level and rarity.

This isn't going well so far. I've needed at least two tries on each of the first five rounds, aside from #3. I've now had two losses on round 5, with my epic, ultra rare Pearl Peryton being unable to take down the winter wolverine.

I am SO disappointed in myself. I chose the epic Panda to battle the lvl 4 Frostfang in round 8. The first tap generated a critical hit. So did the second. Then, THEN in my BRILLIANCE I leaned my lazy hand across the iPad to tap in the final blow and apparently the edge of my palm hit the ultimate hit button and 30 gems went up in flames.

Add me to the list of folks with a lot of early losses. Since so many of us are having the same experience (more than usual it seems to me), maybe the odds are being revised. ???? The last tournament (3 day) in DS was especially difficult too.

I was coming here to comment on the more-than-usual losses in the early rounds - I'm only up to R8, with 2-3 losses at almost every round (using only L15 animals listed as recommended fighters) when I usually breeze through at least the first 14-20 rounds of a 30-round tournament without a loss - and see that others are having problems as well, which kinda makes me feel better?

I am not sure why I didn't notice earlier but it costs me $3,000 coins per battle in this tournament where previous tournaments cost me $2,500. I don't care much about coins since I have just passed the 300 million mark but I do find it odd. Once upon a time we also would get food and coins for winning each round in addition to tokens. Not a big deal for me, but I think the extra food and coins are useful to players just starting out when those resources are more meaningful.

Oh my gosh the new Treent is so cute in battle... well my screenshot was slow and missed the presents coming out of the box. I will use this often just to watch her. She reminds me of a cross between Tinker bell and the Grinch, so I named her Tinch (I liked Grinybel, but she doesn't grin)

I too used the new Treent once just to see it's battle animation. Indeed it is a nice one. :)
Despite being at epic level she did lose the match though. No problem. Ember took care of it on the rematch. ;)
I haven't been keeping full track of my results this time, but so far it's been easy faring: all of the rounds were won either on the first attempt (most of the time) or on the second one. Until.... I came across the level 16 Obsidian Cyclops (round 18), which is always a tough opponent to beat. My Quartz Quetzalcoatl lost once from it and my Trick-or-Treent 3 times so far. I hope to score a win soon!

Come to think of it, I'm a bit surprised that this time around there is no level 20 ultra rare to fight and that there are only 2 ultra rares, one of which a very low level Money Badger in round 6. Well, so much the better for us, I guess. :P

I was coming here to comment on the more-than-usual losses in the early rounds - I'm only up to R8, with 2-3 losses at almost every round (using only L15 animals listed as recommended fighters) when I usually breeze through at least the first 14-20 rounds of a 30-round tournament without a loss - and see that others are having problems as well, which kinda makes me feel better?

Well insomnia it's not just you. I've been following the same pattern. In fact it seemed that way with the gorilla in the Christmas flash tourney also. At least for me. I try to goal line these tourneys by seeing if I can defeat 5 a day (in a 6 day tourney) to stay on pace. Usually I surpass that which is good because inevitably I meet someone in the 18-23 round that takes me multiple tries all day to eventually eliminate. But I've been struggling to meet my 5 quota losing 2/3x almost each round. With quality opponents as yourself. Maybe things get more challenging as we advance as players. I also am having no luck breeding anymore. Trios, limited, new creatures. You name it. And playing now for almost a year and having better and rarer animals to give me better breeding options, it's just not working out. Maybe it is all random and I'm having low luck biorhythms. ��

Obsidian cyclops up next for me once I get by Psyena. Not looking forward to it. But I hear you. It's like I really don't care about a skater gator, so if I win a few silly sweaters fine. You do lose interest when it gets ridiculous. Kind of with breeding. Tired of my 17 hr. Fails. Eventually I say sayonara and breed for myself. Challenges are good and you wouldn't want them to be too easy, it is a tournament, but the lack of consistency makes you feel like "so what". Best of luck Scribbles. Crystal Unicorn took out the Icegator on the first try. Overall record of 30-19, see post #4 for details. This was one of the better performances by my troops. Icegator will have plenty of company in storage.

O.k., so far this tournament has been a dooze for me, except for round 18 (Obsidian Cyclops) and round 24 where I'm currently stuck a bit.
The Cyclops could not be done in by my epic QQ in two attempts nor by my epic Giving Treent in 4 attempts. It was then that I received a PM from a befriended member (thanks! I took your advice) recommending me to use my epic Crystal Unicorn. Now, that's an animal that just about "lives" in the breeding den and such was the case when I received the PM too, but... it then had only some 40 minutes to go to finish yet another Koala fail breeding, so I waited that out, selected it for its "Maiden Fight" (pun intended :) ), and even though my new animals normally tend to lose their very first fight for me, it instantly did the Obsidian Cyclops in! :P
A good thing indeed that I decided to raise one of my two CUs to epic level. :)

As for round 24: I've lost once using the Magmacore and twice using the new Giving Treent (both at epic level). This may sound odd, but in a way I secretly don't even mind losing a few times from the Nightmare, as that is ranked number 1 on my "Most wanted" list (with the Skeletal Dragon ranking at #2). It's cool to see it in action, even if it is besting my animals. :P

You're absolutely right and during tournaments I normally use my gem-nature hybrids that way: the epic QQ is kept free for battles and the level 11 ED is used for breeding. :)
It's just that I still have to "get used" to picking the CU for battles, and... the epic CU is my 6th animal in the list of animals. For my level 9 CU I have to scroll waayyyyyy down, past some 100+ level 10 animals (most of my animals are level 10), so it's a bit of a "lazy thing" to simply pick the epic one. :P
It's actually for that very same reason that I raised the ED from level 10 to 11. :)
But.... as you say: I may use the CU some more in combat now. Normally I'm not sure if it's better e.g. when battling earth to use the single element CU, or the dual element QQ, which has 2 strong elements against earth. Perhaps there's no difference.
In the specific situation of fighting the Cyclops there IS a difference of course, as nature is weak to gem, so for battling the Cyclops I would expect the CU to have better odds...

Having written all of the above, my Giving Treent just lost a 3rd time from the Nightmare. I'm kinda ready for a victory now. It looks as if the GT is too kind for being much of a fighter. I think I'll resort to one of my baddies next; possibly my epic Magmacore (doubly strong) or I'll just let Ember sort out the Nightmare. I think I'll do the latter: whenever in trouble, "find Ember"! :)

I used a level 15 Barn Owl from the Autumn Festival World Event to defeat the Great Danebow. The Autumn element is Strong to both Electric and Water.

This tournament was surprisingly easy on me, with exception of rounds 18 (Obsidian Cyclops) and 24 (Nightmare) all rounds were won in 1 or 2 attempts, most of them in 1 attempt. This was definitely one of the easiest tournaments on me.
I didn't mind losing a few times from the Nightmare; that's such a beautiful animal and I enjoyed seeing it in action, even if it was going against my animals. As mentioned by someone else, the battle animation of the Icegator is a hoot. I only saw it once though, as after that my epic Crystal Unicorn eliminated it with a massive critical hit.

Of the three tournaments I've played, this was the easiest by far.
Unlike previous tournaments where some levels took 10-15 attemps to defeat, the max here was three.
And as said up thread, the most effective animals were the basic ones.

yes nightmare is a very powerful animal : my baby account got it epic and it wins more battles than it lose.
i didn't epic it in my main account because my cosmic Phoenix (very powerful too) was already going for epic :D

Finally finished! My record was 30-24, with multiple losses on 14 rounds. My most difficult opponent by far was the Obsidian Cyclops, where I had six losses. Thankfully, I won rounds 27-30 on the first try, which is great, considering it too me two tries each to get past the first two rounds! Congrats to everyone who had already finished, and good luck to those still working on it.

Finally finished! My record was 30-24, with multiple losses on 14 rounds. My most difficult opponent by far was the Obsidian Cyclops, where I had six losses. Thankfully, I won rounds 27-30 on the first try, which is great, considering it too me two tries each to get past the first two rounds! Congrats to everyone who had already finished, and good luck to those still working on it.

Anyone else get a chuckle out of the Icegator's fighting animation? :D

I am totally shocked. I made it through the tournament. I honestly didn't think I had a chance. My goal was to reach level 20. I have no ultra rare animals, and the ONE epic level animal I have is a common. I thought I would never make it past level 18. It took 8 tries to beat it. Then I thought I would not get past level 28. That one took 11 tries. None of the other levels took more than 3 tries.

I am very pleased to complete it but am shocked that I did given the problems that it was apparently giving others who I am sure had far stronger animals. I suppose persistence paid off.

I too do not have any epic animals there and only ultra rare I have is the unicorn !! That too at lvl 9 . So am pretty surprised at the outcome

Stick w/Rock & Fire as both elements are strong against Pluma's Electric and Dark. My Magmacore gets this guy every time. R-F or R-F-R it's the best combo for this animal. Good luck. Also if you have an eerie owl the Halloween element was Critical versus ice gator.

Use electric on the arboar as water and leaf are both weak to it. So use your highest super rare electric. Like gold lion or jingle shells. I got him with 2 hits electric of jingle shells after my Thorilla epic electric failed.
Got skeletal steed right away with glacial griffin. A strong water-rock-water combo is very helpful here.
Punk skunk was a royal pain. Treent usually does but not this time after multiple tries. The rocking horse with Fire finally got it. So maybe a strong fire if you don't have a rocking horse.
Turtle dove go electric all the way. STROngest electric. My Thorilla in one hit.
Pluma earth & fire. Electric and dark are weak to both. My Magmacore has bested a Pluma in very tournament.
Then the Halloween element of eerie owl took care of gator in a hit.

I'm up to 5 losses with Sayabara now. I don't mind using a few gems to sped along, but I'm not going to go crazy with so many rounds still left & so little time left.

I do not believe that it makes a difference. I think that once you choose your animal the odds are locked in. Sometimes I will alternate to verify the attack strength of the elements but often I just choose the first one on the left. Like I stated earlier, I don't believe it makes a difference. The animal selection is what is important.

I finally finished with a record of 30 wins, 35 losses. I'm surprised that I didn't end up with more losses as it was an unusually difficult tournament for me. Glad to have it over!

I was hoping I was doing something wrong all along that I could change that would allow me to win every tournament from now on :rolleyes: Just like you I also tend to choose the left element, or gem when I use gem animals. My animal choices are always strong and doubly strong if possible. I'm double battling so I have 18 tries left and I'm currently battling the Punk Skunk. Aww. Thanks;). I spent more gems then I intended, but not too crazy. I really hate not finishing these tournaments even if the animal sits in storage for awhile waiting for a spot;). Now to keep food supply stocked as we prepare to finish the world event (I have my nutcracker as of this am) & prep for the next storybook I believe.

Hopefully anyone else closing in on this tournament can finish up before the timer expires

I'm sorry to read about you losing another tournament. :(
Over the past weekend I did come to "realise" (or rather: "see confirmed") something: for my main account's well-chosen epic fighters this tournament was a cakewalk, but just for the heck of it and for gathering Sweaters I also decided to participate somewhat in it on my secondary account, with lower classed fighters. When picking all the right animals in terms of elemental combinations and where possible rarity, the first 10 rounds or so went with little trouble, but..... the level 11 Shockatoo gave me VERY heavy losses to all of the level 10 animals I tried, which include the doubly strong Eerie Owl and even the level 10 Gold Lion (!). After some 7-8 losses with these animals I decided to not even bother trying further.

As a general observation (i.e. not specifically aimed at your situation), for tournaments I cannot stress enough just HOW important it is to use animals of as high a level as possible. For having serious chances at securing a rather painless win, level 10 just isn't going to cut it. I'd expect level 13 to be the minimum level to have a decent chance, but I do actually think that using epic animals makes a BIG difference.
I'm not sure which (level) animals you used this time around, but in case they weren't epics, I'd consider leveling your core fighters up to epic level. You only need some 5 or so (well chosen) animals at epic level to be able to combat almost any opponent...

Curious to hear/read if you can pinpoint a reason (like level) for the loss of this tournament, or if you did indeed use all the right animals and did have them at high enough levels and that it was just bad luck (which also happens from time to time)...

my pricepony failed a few times against pluma, and the one who finally did it in one simple single strike was the spring poney..... unbelievable !!
then I got stuck on the last opponent, and finally at 2 oclock (my time) in the night (S8 I DO HATE YOU SOOOOOO MUCH !!!), I won with Emerald Dragon.....
gosh this was a hard tourney!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not shure I will keep playing this game...... i am completely loosing interest on it, because it becomes more and more difficult, and they want you
to buy gems, wich I dit 3 or 4 times........ but now I dont see the interest anymore to spend money and having such a hard time on tournaments....

I thought I had an easier time until I reached round 28. I could not beat him. My epic crystal unicorn failed miserably at least 8 times among other various fails including epic gold lion. I often feel that there are just some tournaments that you're not going to win unless you use the ultimate hit. In fact this is the first tournament that I've won in a while and I have many epics and ultra rares. I just can't explain it other than there are just some you're not going to win.
