Out of funds?

I've currently been playing on St. Charles place and I'm not able to get any kind of boosts from daubs because it says I'm out of funds. I'm really confused. What does cash have to do with it? Is my cash getting drained by these boosts that I'm not buying? Just frustrating not to have boosts that I thought were based on how many daubs you have.

Any help or suggestions?

Edit: and my cash keeps disappearing even though I'm not aware I'm buying anything.

It seems like you are buying Boosts with Cash. When you see that there is a '0' next to the Lightning Bolt, that means you are out of Boosts and that's when the game will offer you the chance to purchase Boosts. When you run out of Boosts in-game, you are able to buy more Boosts with Cash. If you do not have enough Cash, you can buy Boosts with Gems. If you do not have enough Cash or Gems for this, then it will say 'Out of Funds'. Once you run out of Boosts, then you can go to the Home screen (bottom right purple suitcase) and you can buy more Boosts with Cash.
