Help! Watering crops

I'm brand new to playing this. :) I am having a problem watering other ppl's crops - I am pressing the water can, am I doing something wrong?

In order to water someone's crops you need to click on a crop that has not already been watered. If a **** has been watered you will see the water drops above the crop.
