Cats, Dogs and Ponnies

I haven't added any pets yet. Any advise on best use would be appreciated. Hated to spend gems on dogs or cats.
What rewards do they give. Thanks.

You have to make food for them & then after feeding them, you collect from them (takes about 5 hours)
Collections from them can be any where between 25 coins - 200 coins. I've also received bricks, paint & shovels/axe picks from them.

It's a cumulative thing. The more pets you have out to collect from, the better your chances of getting good prizes.

I keep a dozen or more of the regular pets out. Every five hours, I can collect from them. I always get at least some building parts (nails, screws, etc) and mining tools. I often get a gem or a land expansion paper. The pets always drop a few coins and XP in addition to any prizes.

The show ponies each give 15 gems/week, but are much more expensive. Once or twice a year they go on sale for 50% off.

Has anyone noticed that the sheep and Alpaca have no water source? We don't want the SPCA after us for cruelty to animals!
