Mastery spice

I thought when I used this spice it would give you a star on the food you spiced! This doesnt seem to be happening - have I picked this up wrong?

Mastery Spice will provide you an extra star on the dish you are making.

For example:
Your Mastery status on the Hamburger is at 10/60. Mastery Spice was used and you will receive 2 stars instead of 1. Once the Hamburger is finished, the Mastery status on the Hamburger is now 12/60.
