As many other things in the game, beasts are part of it since your very first steps in the Glimmer Forest. Monsters will spawn as you play the game. To get rid of the monsters, you need to battle it. Once you defeat it, you get a small reward; each monster provides various items and some energy.

Notes: This reflects the latest stand of the game with all main story line quests done. You may experience differences in spawn rate, spawn sources, and rewards at different stages of the game.

Regulars
Spawn any time during play. They will appear gradually as progressing through the main story line.

Battles
Once a monster has spawned on the game board, you need to battle it to get rid of it. Some important battle facts are:

The battle is a series of weapon Left, Middle or Right swings. Each swing deals 1-HP damage.
The battle is won once the monster has no more HP.
Critical hits are dealt on random occasions. It inflicts 2-HP damage; with some special monsters you can inflict more damage.
The Tablet of Tabernum provides a shard that increases the critical hit rate.
A battle drains energy, you might get some back, but in general you lose more energy as you gain.
A monster does not heal from combat injuries, so you can take your time to fight. You can even leave a monster with 1 HP for weeks in a corner of your map.

Statistics
Energy Payback
Battles statistics all made with the knowledge shard from monsters spawned during regular play.

https://www.portailsmm.com/cs/pics/CastleStory-Nugget-05-EnergyPayback.png

Boars remain high energy drainers. The best fights are with the light monsters: Skunks & Trolls. They have the highest chance of generating a positive energy balance and are prone to high critical hits (faster defeat). For the lucky persons able to spawn Lovecupine, they are your best friend.

https://www.portailsmm.com/cs/pics/CastleStory-Nugget-05-EnergyBalance.png

Note that statistics on regular Glimmer Trolls have not been made!

Critical Hits
A critical hit is when a swings deals 2 or more damage. There is not statics on special monsters; however experience has shown that they are more prone to take critical hits then regular monsters.

https://www.portailsmm.com/cs/pics/CastleStory-Nugget-05-CriticalHits.png

The average change for a critical hit is 30%. Chances for a critical hit increases when it is the last blow to be made.

Battle Strategy
Speculation has been rampant since long on what is the best swing you need to perform to maximize de energy delta.

https://www.portailsmm.com/cs/pics/CastleStory-Nugget-05-BattleStrategy.png

With R, M or L respectively Left, Middle or Right. The best strategy in terms of return on energy remains a right hit only approach.

Skunkupines spawn from sugar and trees too.
Fangbeasts also spawn from trees.
Trolls come from cocoa, strawberries, glimmerbulbs, later dire boss take those spots.
Glimmer trolls - Glimmergate.

Oh, and the Glimmer Golemn until you close the gate consistently shows up and the HP is 10. I can't recall if it was 90 or 99 for the brawling fight, but other than that one time, the rest of the time he showed up it was always a 10 hit. He kept taking my energy!

Dire Boar and Fangbeast both spawn sometimes when I collect from the Magic Forge's, Hatchery's, Stable's, Mill's, and Tinker Camp.

I've never had a monster spawn from the magic forge or the tinker camp.

Other additions:

Spawn skunkupines - also tomatoes, fellora plants, Pepe the skunkupine, only certain trees ( not maple tree or fruit trees)

Lovecupines - also pink alicorn, wedding alicorn has been reported, love animals

Fangbeast - only buildings are hatcheries and stables (not dire boars) but not sure if farmhouses spawn them, hot peppers, carrots, trees but most choppable trees spawn skunkupines. Not from sugar.

Dire boar - also windmills, goddess tree, multi flowered hedge, mushrooms (any but fluttermush), tablet of tabernum, magic garden, deep mine, sparkling mine, ivy's hut, jewelers, Sabrina's house, conservatories, libraries, market, tavern, thurstons fort, cottage, Thomas' house, sawmills.

Perhaps someone can confirm whether dire boars spawn from observatories, Knights hall, jousting arena, watchtower, spires.

dire boars also drop troll essence. i'm still in troll tribe, and can tell it for sure.

also, what for i came here right now.
i've just got a dire boar triggered by collection from library, and this dire boar gave me TWO BOAR PELTS!
so, i don't need to go to ferral lands any more, i have enough pelts to finish troll tribe.

red mushroom circles, they like. and rock outcropping too. they also react for harvesting cabbage.

i'm not sure about the level, but yr 23rd is ok for trolls.
royal building yes, they like. but the goods... no. crafting buildings - no. stables and hatchery - no, it's for fangbests.
mushrooms they like, yes. even usual mushroom path. btw, old logs also can work. they like everything that can drop glimmerdust (GD troves too).

Can someone's confirm or correct my belief that it doesn't make a difference which of the three attack buttons you press when attacking?

meme1098
02-24-15, 03:20 PM
It probably doesn't matter but a lot of players have a favorite way to attack.

I always start with the middle one, go to the left, then back to the middle and then the last strike is usually the far right. I usually get a few double hits that way., at least, it seems that way to me...lol

PraxisOfGood
02-24-15, 03:47 PM
Yeah, I used to have a very similar strategy, and then I switched to just mashing down the right button and didnt seem to get any more or fewer double hits.

Mind you, I'd love it if for each attack there was exactly one attack that would do 2 damage and there was a subtle variation in the animation that would tell you which attack was the right one if you wanted to take the time to figure it out. I just have a hunch that that's not actually the way that battles were actually implemented :)

Can someone's confirm or correct my belief that it doesn't make a difference which of the three attack buttons you press when attacking?

As a long time player, I would say their is no attack better then others, however if you get a critical (2 HP) hit with one of the 3 swings, then choose another of the two for the next. Then I get close to 50% chance of a critical on the next swing. I never do 2x the same in a row, unless just 1 HP remains.

I'm curious...
Has anyone ever gotten a skunkupine from a red trillium or a fangbeast from the Cownt or purple cow?

I don't think I've ever spawned either beast from those respective things & one would think you *could* since flowers beget skunkupines & cows beget fangbeasts, so now I'm wondering if they're not coded to spawn from those 3 things. (?)

Question, do beasts spawn before or after collecting from an item, otherwise if I click on a cow does it drop the milk and then the beasts spawn or does the beast spawn before it can drop the milk? (I usually go too fast to notice). If they spawn after collecting from an item then I have had a beast spawn from the cownt.

Spawn happens after a collection. Also, once a spawn occurs, the current task collection list is discard as well.

Dire boars are no issue to spawn. I have issues getting Skunks & Fangs, but my current strategy is to have some flowers out and farm cattle (Cow, Sheep & Pig). I generally get a hit. As for crops I use Fellora, Corn or Wheat as bait. I have the best hit rate with Fellora.

My drop rate for Fangbeast seems better. I switched out some of my cows so I'm starting to suspect the spawn rates are slightly higher or lower depending on the animal, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it was just a typical long, dry streak. I think I might start keeping track for a little while, just because I'm curious about the numbers as far as what items spawn the best. But, I've been busy the last few days and end up rushing to spawn Fangbeasts before the timer expires, and I'll have to rearrange my animals a bit, so no rush to start today - I'll be ready for the next Monster event, though ;)

I wonder what has happened to the monsters? 20 strawberries + 20 hits on rock outcropping + 40 chops on trees + hit on goddess tree + 7 hits on ponds + 24 hits on cows = 112 hits & not one monster. Where did they go? Something hinky when 112 hits = 0 monsters. Usually, can‘t get through a collection of strawberries or livestock with out interruption by a monster.

During the monster hunt you scare them off. It's harder to get spawns. I am facing the same issue. Alas the troll pit does not count but the Jousting L5 arena does, it is the only secure source of monsters.

Looking through old notes, we made a Homemade Sword to fight Skunkupines, and Meat Cleaver to fight Fangbeasts. I didn't think we made anything to fight trolls. Are there both Trolls and Glimmer Trolls in the game? Clearly I wasn't paying attention, lol.

Anyways, I found an Enchanted Blade in my bank, it says it glows when trolls are near. We made it right after Thurston put on his mail. (It's not Excalibam.) Did we fight trolls/glimmer trolls before we made it? Or is that what unlocks them?

Spawning is so random (sometimes a dry spell goes on forever!!) so it's hard to pin anything down. Under Glimmer Trolls it says "buildings," but I haven't had much luck: once every hundred years I get one at the library or tavern. I don't use farmhouses, maybe that's my problem? I thought fangbeasts liked houses, though. (100% endorsement of fangbeasts spawning for animals and stables. I think sawmills also.)

(It seems that events cause wild seesawing of relevant spawns; even the ones we need for the event are everywhere one day and absent the next.)

Trolls don't spawn anymore once you have the Troll Sparring Pit. Only then you can spawn it from there, lucky if you have also the Lair of Beasts. Also it is hard to pin a monster to a building as it changes over time and/or you progress in the story. Events also tend to mess up the span location and rates. The only constants seems to be plants & crops.

The names might be different in the story line but Glimmer Trolls look and act like plain Trolls (both green with troll club and 7 HP) so I'd say you're correct and it was the Enchanted Blade that was crafted to fight Trolls. I think maybe they knocked the Glimmer off of the Troll description at some point for whatever reason, I've been thinking of maybe playing the game on a new account just so I can focus on the story and refresh my memory, lol. If said memory serves, Excalibam is the sword we needed to craft to unlock the Troll King square on our boards and fight him.

I looked back at the goal guide and the dialogue claims "Glimmer Trolls hide very well, unless you know exactly where to look. They enjoy human riches and food. Try looking in places where people visit or dwell." So if you're still in the goals where you can spawn trolls I'd think maybe taverns and jewelers were a good place (food and riches) but as the ever knowledgeable Shibuya pointed out, at a certain point the trolls stop spawning.

Just to clarify, they stop spawning waaaay before you get to the troll sparring pit. I just got the pit, and except for the ones from the Lair, I haven't seen a troll in years :D I guess they stop spawning once boars appear.

They spawn from the new Cloudberry bush. Please go to the discussion thread called The Search for Sabina for more info.

I'm new here (not sure exactly where to post my question), and new to Castle Story, but I have a Blue Dire Boar but can't craft the Meat Cleaver in the kitchen. I can't find any information on how to get it. The boar is over quite a few of my buildings, hindering my game play. If anyone has advice on how to get the meat cleaver in my kitchen, I would really appreciate it! Again, I'm sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place, but it's so confusing!

Hi, welcome to the forum! The meat cleaver should already be crafted as you would have done it quite early in the game when skunkupines and fangbeasts were introduced. If you tap on the blue boar does the attack screen come up - they are 3 sword motions - left, right and middle? If yes, it should come up with 30/30 which means it will take 30 hits but some hits are multi damage. You need to have enough energy to defeat it, but you can come back to it if not fully defeated.

Can you post the name of your goal if you can - I know there will be loads in your blue goal book, but is it called "Round 3, Fight!"?

I'm not sure about that specific monster spawn but the Explorer's Permit falls under the Search for Sabina story and all the spawns for that arc are pretty much guaranteed to spawn by collecting from the Cloudberry Bushes or by chopping the Grand Rooted Illium Plant.

The detailed info for that quest can be found here: https://forums.storm8.com/showthread.php?105193-Castle-Story-07-05-The-Search-for-Sabina

I forgot which monster drops Seal of the Fawn for making expansion permits. Can anyone help, please? Had enough to keep me for quite awhile & now I'm done to 3. I know they drop from red nosed fawicorns & fireflies but need more. Thanks.

Hi, my first monster hunt since returning to game and I have never had a flyger in my kingdom. I did see where someone got one from Ivy's purple cow. I can't find any other info.

Much thanks for all the help. You guys are the best part of Castle story ♡

I do not register special spawns here. Only regulars. For event related spawns you must look in the event thread.

So they are special spawns. Thanks

I can't find much info about flygers. Do they appear at a certain point of a main goal line, or are they always a special event relayed spawn? TIA

I think there's a longer list of Fangbeast Spawns in SW's Inventory here (https://forums.storm8.com/showthread.php?76375-Castle-Story-Inventory-Guide&p=1025267&viewfull=1#post1025267).

Generally speaking standard items such as Town Buildings, animals (cows, chickens, sheep) and most trees spawn fangbeasts. I've been adding to the inventory listing for "Fangbeast Spawns" for a while now but there might still be a smattering of other items I haven't cross referenced. There are a lot of places now that spawn but if you want to concentrate on farmhouses, stable, hatchery and those 3 animals you will have the most success (and timers aren't that long so that increases the chance to spawn).

I didn't go looking for fangbeasts when going through that storyline as a lot of events have fangbeasts as the monster that needs to spawn for a special drop, or they have farmhouse collections which spawn them regularly. Good luck though!
